Belted Kingfisher

Belted Kingfisher bird
-"Belted Kingfisher", acrylic and collage on recycled paper, 6" x 6".

Belted kingfishers are, as the name suggests, really incredible at fishing. They hunt over clear water looking for fish, crayfish, frogs, and insects. Once prey is spotted, the belted kingfishers dive below the surface of the water to catch their target. They then take their catch and hit it against a rock or tree branch to kill it.
Parents teach their young to dive and fish for prey by throwing dead fish into the water for them to practice. (National Geographic's Bird Guide of North America)
